Michael J. Vaughn is the author of twenty-nine novels, including the acclaimed Mermaids' Tears and his latest, Punks for the Opera. He is also a fine arts painter and drummer-vocalist for San Jose's El Camino Revival Band. Vaughn's novels have won prizes in the San Francisco, New England and Hollywood book festivals. He worked for Writer's Digest as a contributing writer and competitions judge, and won a fellowship from Arts Council Silicon Valley.

Vaughn is also a widely published poet and opera critic for the Palo Alto Weekly. He graduated from San Jose State with a journalism degree and a classical voice minor. He was born in Brunswick, Maine, and spent much of his childhood shuttling around the country, courtesy of his father Harold's career as a pilot with the US Navy.

What a soul-mending book! This beautiful piece of fiction is a delightful story of many people of different ages and stages, coming of age. This is seen through the eyes of the artist. From paintings, song, dance, and baseball, the mathematics of art and physics reflect on a group of people. Teenagers, middle-agers, and oldsters are all learning that we never truly grow up and the joy is in the journey. I was impressed with how the author handled difficult situations with calm good humor and good sense. I think that I am in love with this man's work. I am off to find another book of his to read.

Another fast, enjoyable read from Michael J Vaughn. Despite this being one of his shorter books, a lot happens, not the least of which is Chris 's patronage of an artist he has yet to meet and the ways in which his and his family's lives change once they do meet. The cameos by characters from his other books is reminiscent, in a good way, of the Blue -White -Red (film) trilogy as well as literary works by the masters that were not obviously written as a series. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates reading about abstract art, baseball and the search for the meaning of life.

Art can change a person. It can also change someones life. As an artist, the ability to create changed me. How I see the world and interact with it. This book illustrates how art can be so much more. How it can effect changes on a family, a neighborhood, or even a city. Although a bit disconcerting at first, each chapter is from a different persons perspective and it takes a while to become comfortable switching between characters. But it's well worth it. The juxtaposition of math, music , art and baseball sounds ludicrous but works so well together. Michael Vaughn is a pro at fleshing out the characters, making them real, without being pretentious. I can't say enough good things about this book.

This was the 2nd Vaughn novel I read (The Popcorn Girl was first), and after this, I sought out everything I could find. I truly enjoy his style, but this novel - A Painting Called Sylvia - is far and away his best, in my opinion.

Vaughn takes a character, places that character in the most ordinary of circumstances, and makes an extraordinary story.
